Indefinite curfew in Saptari district HQs, adjoining areas

RAJBIRAJ: The District Administration Office has clamped an indefinite curfew in the district headquarters Rajbiraj and adjoining areas from 2:30 pm today.

The prohibitory order was issued as the cadres and supporters of United Democratic Madhesi Front turned violent during an indefinite general shutdown that they called in the district to protest fatal shooting by police in Maleth VDC yesterday. The UDMF has imposed a two-day banda in other districts in the Tarai-Madhes region.

The UDMF claimed four protesters were killed in police action yesterday, while the government has verified three deaths only.

The curfew will be imposed in the region from Khando River in the east, Jamuni Mills in the west, Radhakrishna Temple in the north and Mahendra Bindeshawari Campus in the south, according DSP Dan Bahadur Karki at the District Police Office.

Meanwhile, the UDMF hurled petrol bombs at the Rastriya Banijya Bank in Gajendra Chok of Rajbiraj.

Earlier they attacked offices of Local Peace Committee, District Forests Office and Rajbiraj Municipality and a vehicle of National Human Rights Commission.

APF post burned?

A group of UDMF cadres attacked and set the Armed Police Force’s check post on fire at Koshi Barrage in Bhardaha of district, according to locals.

The APF’s SP Jaya Bahadur Khadka, however, did not verify the incident.

Suspension demanded

District leaders of the UDMF constituents parties in held a meeting in Saptari this morning.

They decided to demand suspension of Saptari’s Chief District Officer and security officials including SP and DSP of Nepal Police and SP of Armed Police Force.

Also, they demanded a high-level probe commission to look into yesterday’s fatal incident.

Three persons – Sanjan Mehata of Maleth-2, Pitambar Mandal of Maleth-8 and Ananda Saha of Prasawani – were killed after being hit by bullets in police action. The UDMF, on the other hand, had claimed one more person was shot dead by police.

The UDMF has demanded the persons who were killed yesterday be declared martyrs, and due compensation be provided to the bereaved families.
