‘Study on Mahakali project complete’

New Delhi, November 27:

All aspects of the joint study on the Mahakali Pancheshwor Multipurpose Project, except the dam regulation area, have been been completed, Indian Minister of State for Water Resources Jayprakash Narayan Yadav told the parliament.

According to the Mahakali Treaty signed between Nepal and India 11 years ago, the Detailed Project Report (DPR) was to be prepared within six months from the date of signing the treaty.

Construction of Pancheshwor Project, Sarada barrage and the Tanakpur dam for electricity generation and irrigation in Nepal and India are the objectives of the treaty.

Yadav also informed the parliament that the joint study on the Saptakoshi High Dam and Sunkoshi Reservoir and Diversion Project is ongoing.

He said that a joint project office for field survey and study on Saptakoshi Multipurpose Project and Sunkoshi Reservoir and Diversion Project has been established in Nepal.

The Mahakali Project will be implemented as per the DPR and the agreement between Nepal and Indian government, he said. Preliminary study has shown that 6,000-mw of electricity can be generated from the project.
