Amend interim statute: Badal

Biratnagar, February 11:

CPN (Maoist) in charge in the eastern region Ram Bahadur Thapa ‘Badal’ has said different problems related with the races and ethnic communities should be solved by amending the interim constitution.

He said this at a press conference held by the Federation of Nepalese Journalists, Morang branch, here today.

Expressing his support to the movement of the indigenous community, ethnic community and Terai community for their liberty, he said: “The government should not ignore their issues.”

Replying to journalists, he said: “A republican front should lead the present movement and move ahead and later the constituent assembly should be held.”

He said the activities of the royalists and the ‘foreign forces’ may result in a delay of the CA polls, but the Maoists are committed to expose them. “An example of this is the remark made by Nepal Army Brig Gen Dilip SJB Rana,” he said.

Indigenous community, Dalits and people of the Karnali region are also preparing to launch a movement, he said, and demanded establishment of a federal system of governance and autonomous republican set-up.

He said the Maoists’ mass meet in Kathmandu on February 13 will be the beginning of Jana Andolan III and claimed that the end of monarchy and restoration of democracy in the country is possible only through talks and understanding.

Meanwhile, a report from Palpa quoted Maoist western region commander Top Bahadur Rayamajhi today as saying his party is committed to lead the nation on a new path.

Speaking at a press conference organised by the Palpa chapter of Press Chautari Nepal in Tansen, Rayamajhi said: “All political parties are terrified that Maoists will get stronger after the constituent assembly (CA).”

“The Maoists are active in parliament and in the villages for a fair CA poll,” he said.
