Pokhara, September 8 Police held Narayan Paudel, 30, of Dhital, Kaski, for his involvement in the murder of American national Dahlia Yehia, 25, on September 3. Yehia had reached the Lake City after providing succour to earthquake victims in Gorkha. To influence the investigation, Paudel had jumped from the roof of District Police Office, Kaski, on September 4 and fractured both his legs and skull. He is unable to speak and is undergoing treatment at Manipal Hospital. Kaski police Chief SP Hari Bahadur Pal said details of the murder would be known only after Paudel recovers.Yehia had landed in Kathmandu on July 30. She came to Pokhara on August 4. Preliminary investigation showed that she had been living in Paudel’s apartment. Paudel told police during interrogation that he had murdered Yehia on the night of August 7, wrapped the body in a bed-sheet and flung it on the banks of the Seti River along the Pokhara-Baglung road section.A teacher on relief quota at a school in Dhital, Paudel was living in a rented apartment in Simpani. Dahlia was in touch with her family till August 6. After her family lost contact, they had contacted the American Embassy in Kathmandu about their daughter. American officials had launched a search operation to find her. They had also pasted her photo on the door of Paudel’s rented apartment in a bid to find her. After they failed to trace Yehia’s whereabouts, American officials registered an application with Nepal Police on August 28. A team deployed from Central Bureau of Investigation had tracked down Paudel and arrested him from his room. Yehia and Paudel had met through couchsurfing, a hospitality exchange and social networking website. The CIB team arrested Paudel on the basis of telephone details. According to SP Pal, Paudel told police he had killed Yehia with a hammer and a door bolt. He confessed he killed her for money and Iphone. “Yehia had an Iphone, Rs 5,000 and ATM cards of different banks,” Paudel told police. Police said that he had thrown the Iphone into the Seti River after he could not operate it. Police had maintained silence regarding the incident. However, the incident came out after Paudel jumped off from the rooftop. Two relatives of Dahlia are currently in Pokhara assisting police in their search for Dahlia’s body. Police had recovered a bloodstained bedsheet from the Seti River where Paudel had supposedly thrown Dahlia’s body.
