Assault sparks transport strike
Phidim, November 1:
Protesting the beating of a taxi driver in Yangnam Village Development Committee
yesterday, transport workers brought vehicular movement to a standstill on the
Phidim-Siddin road section in Panchthar district today. They also announced an indefinite transport strike.
The agitating workers halted vehicular movement by parking their vehicles in the middle of the road.
Seven youths, including Surendra Jagebu of Yangnam-4, had thrashed taxi driver Narendra Shrestha yesterday in Yangnam bazaar after the latter refused to let the youths board his taxi.
The workers also accused the youths of snatching a watch and a gold chain from Shrestha. The injured driver has been undergoing treatment in the Panchthar District Hospital.
Demanding an immediate action against the assailants and proper compensation
for the victim, the workers lodged a complaint in the Panchthar District Administration Office today.
The agitators said they would not let vehicles ply the Phidim-Siddin road if their demands were not met.
“The police have been searching for the assailants,” said Deputy Superintendent of Police Tarani Prasad Lamsal.
