BAJURA, SEPTEMBER 26
Puran Raul, a 22-year-old resident of Taapra in Budiganga Municipality-3 of Bajura, is struggling in his fight against cancer due to the lack of financial means at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, Maharajgunj Kathmandu. He has been diagnosed with joint cancer.
For the past eight years, Puran had been struggling with his declining health at home due to a lack of financial resources. However, after his health deteriorated, his relatives took him to Seti Provincial Hospital, Dhangadhi where he sought treatment. With the help of compassionate locals, he managed to gather some funds for initial treatment in Dhangadhi.
However, he found himself in a financial bind after the hospital referred him to Kathmandu, unable to afford a ticket to the capital. A ray of hope emerged when a kind villager, Chakra Bahadur Shah, came to his aid and secured an air ticket to Kathmandu.
Now Puran is grappling with the financial burden of his treatment where he can't even afford a bottle of water, let alone continue the essential cancer treatment recommended by his doctors – chemotherapy, for which he can't even purchase a single tablet of medicine.
The financial situation of Puran's family is very weak, and they struggle to bring food to the table. And with his worsening health, the financial constraints have brought more trouble to their family. Affording nutritious food has become a luxury, and they now face the tough decision of prioritizing his treatment over basic necessities.
"I've been living with this illness for a long time due to my lack of financial means," Puran shared. "Somehow, I made it to Kathmandu. However, despite being admitted to the hospital, I'm unable to provide for myself and am reliant on the kindness of others."
He requires a minimum of Rs 15,000 for just one cycle of treatment, and doctors have informed him that he will need a total of seven to eight cycles of chemotherapy, requiring him to stay in Kathmandu for at least a year. To continue his treatment, he has been actively seeking assistance from well-wishers and organizations.
