Bajura village at high risk of landslide

BAJURA: A village in Gaumul Rural Municipality-1 is at a high risk of landslides in Bajura district.

According to vice-chair of the rural municipality, Sita Thapa, all 42 households in Andradi village are living under constant fear of being swept away by landslide. The village is known to be one of the most remote villages in the district.

The villagers were forced to move to safer locations while it was raining, after a mudslide that occurred on Wednesday midnight divided the village in two, a local Dhan Bahadur Rokaya said. The landslide has swept away the drinking water pipeline creating water shortage in the village. Various paths in and around the village have been damaged causing inconvenience in the movement of the villagers, he said.

Earlier, a mother and daughter were killed in a landslide at Shanti Tole in Gaumul-6, further increasing the fear in the villagers.

The locals are being moved to safer locations and others have been alerted of the possible risk, ward member Harka Bohara said. A team including deputy chair Thapa reached the village to evaluate the situation there and manage the relief effort.

Heavy rainfall since the start of the monsoon season has put as many as 95 villages in the district at a high risk of landslides, informed District Disaster Relief Committee. The committee is preparing to publish the list of villages and send it to the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Among the 95 villages, the highest number of villages are located in Triveni Municipality followed by Badimalika Municipality.
