Road accidents in Bara district increased in the last fiscal year despite a sharp decline in traffic rule violations and enforcement actions, according to the District Traffic Police Office.
Official data show 1,211 accidents occurred in fiscal year 2025/26 (2082/83 BS), claiming 93 lives. In comparison, the district recorded 1,147 accidents and 79 deaths in the previous fiscal year, indicating a rise of 64 accidents and 14 fatalities.
During the review period, traffic police took action against 15,603 vehicles for violating traffic rules, generating Rs 13.57 million in revenue. The figures are significantly lower than the previous fiscal year, when 23,424 vehicles were penalised and Rs 20.24 million collected in fines.
Traffic police attributed the decline in enforcement to shortages of personnel and inadequate monitoring equipment, warning that weaker regulation has coincided with a rise in accidents.
According to the District Traffic Police Office, poor road conditions, overspeeding, driver negligence and disregard for traffic rules remain the leading causes of crashes. Police said they would intensify traffic management and enforcement efforts to reduce accidents and minimise casualties in the coming months.
