Big Two hindering consensus: Khanal

ILAM: CPN-UML Chairman Jhalanath Khanal today said the consensus could not be forged due to the stances of the UCPN-Maoist and the Nepali Congress.

Addressing a meet organised by Ilam chapter of Press Chautari, Khanal said extreme communist nature of the Maoist and NC’s wants to maintain the status quo was impedance to consensus. Khanal claimed that the country would plunge into serious conflict if consensus was not forged within a month. He said, “There is serious misunderstanding among the major political parties,’’ adding,’’ It is high time we found a middle way.’’ Khanal further reiterated that parties should act responsibly. A disaster would take place if

the statute is not drafted on time, he warned. All needed

to work together to bring peace and economic change in the country, he added.

He, however, opined that amendment could be made in the Interim Constitution through consensus so as to allow some more time to the statute drafting process.

He claimed that his party had launched people mobilisation campaign to retaliate against unruly activities of NC and the Maoists. “The campaign is against anarchic activities,” he maintained.
