Bipul Pokharel has been elected the new President of the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) which is an umbrella organisation of journalists nationwide, on Saturday.

Pokharel who was contesting the election for the presidential spot representing the joint alliance of Press Union, Press Organisation, among others, has comfortably defeated candidates Nirmala Sharma and Gajendra Budhathoki who too had registered for the central leadership.

The much-awaited election of the Federation, which has adopted the first-ever direct voting system to elect its central committee leadership, has concluded across the country.

A total of 13,122 members were voting for new leadership in the central committee, province committees, institutions, and associate committees in 97 booths, including in 77 district chapters.
