By-elections: People vote for their representatives across country

KATHMANDU: People are voting today in the by-elections to fill 52 vacant posts of people’s representatives across the country.

The vacant posts in 37 districts include one member of the House of Representatives, three provincial assembly members and 48 chiefs, deputy chiefs and ward chairs of local levels.

According to THT's regional correspondent, Niroj Koirala, 47 per cent voting was completed up until 1:00 pm in the by-polls for the position of ward chair in Shyamshila, Pauwadungma Rural Municipality-1 of the eastern hilly district, Bhojpur. Of the total 1,616 voters, 771 had already cast their votes and the remaining were in the process of doing so.

The polls, which started at 7:30 am, was progressing peacefully, said the office of the chief election officer. There are two polling stations and one polling centre to cast the votes. The elections are being carried out under high security. A senior citizen of 82 years also cast her vote today.

Voters in Panchthar district have also cast their votes for the position of a rural municipality chair and two ward chairs. As reported by THT's Laxmi Gautam from the district, the polls were carried out to elect the chair in Phalgunanda Rural Municipality with 16,577 voters. Similarly, there are a total of 3,676 registered voters to elect the ward chair in Phidim Municipality-1 and 2,600 voters in Hilihang Rural Municipality-7.

As compared to the previous elections, little enthusiasm was witnessed among the voters. There are 17 polling stations and 31 polling centres for the ongoing by-elections in Pachthar district.
