Flags lowered nationwide as Nepal pays tribute to 73 lives lost

KATHMANDU, SEPTEMBER 17

Nepal observed a nationwide day of mourning on Wednesday, lowering national flags and holding candlelight vigils in memory of those who died during the recent Gen-Z protests.

Today, all government offices across the country and Nepali missions abroad flew the national flag at half-mast, following a Cabinet decision on September 15 to honor the victims.

The Gen-Z demonstrations, held on September 8 and 9 to demand the reopening of social media platforms, an end to corruption, and stronger government accountability, claimed at least 73 lives.

Candlelight vigils were held across the country-including at Maitighar Mandala in Kathmandu, the Parliament building, Sunsari, and several other districts-where citizens lit lamps and observed moments of silence.

In the evening, the Federation of Nepali Journalists, Kathmandu Valley Committee, led a candlelight vigil and moment of silence at Maitighar Mandala, where participants paid tribute to the deceased. Similarly, a candlelight vigil and mourning was held at UN Building in Lalitpur.
