Central, district leaders try their luck in polls

Attraction to the local election among political parties is such that even district level leaders of various political parties have thrown their hats into the ring from the local bodies.

To start with, ruling party CPN-MC leader Dinanath Gautam is running for the post of chairperson from Chauri Deurali Rural Municipality. He is the party’s politburo member and former district chairperson. When asked, the leader said he decided to file his candidacy responding to the calls of locals. “In fact, we can serve the society from anywhere, any position,” he argued.

As for Nepali Congress, its district vice-chairperson Achyut Poudel has fielded himself as a candidate for the mayoral post from Mandan Deupur Municipality.

Similarly, former NC district secretary Bidur Banjara is running for mayor of Panauti Municipality, while its regional chairperson Ramesh Humagain is fighting for the mayoral post from Dhulikhel Municipality.

CPN-UML district Vice-chairperson Ashok Byanju is all set to take on Humagain for the mayoral post in Dhulikhel. Besides, while Madheshi Janadhikar Forum Democratic district secretary Prakash Thapa is contesting for the chairperson from Bethanchowk Rural Municipality, there are various other leaders who are trying their luck for various positions in the local bodies.

The district comprising six municipalities and seven rural municipalities has a total of 230,849 registered voters. A total of 701 representatives will be elected for different positions for which a total of 2,756 nominations have been filed.
