Chinese businessmen let go Nepali goods carriers
SINDHUPALCHOWK: Sixty fully laden Nepali containers, which were under control of Chinese businessmen saying that the latter's $ 3 lakhs robbed in Swoyambhu in the capital was not yet recovered, were released today.
The Chinese businessmen had seized the containers from Thursday saying that they were yet to get the cash looted in Kathmandu on October 17. The containers left for Nepal today afternoon after representatives of both the countries agreed to discuss the issue tomorrow.
According to Bijay Poudel, chief of Tatopani Immigration Office, the Chinese businessmen let all the containers go after they agreed to sort out the issue during a discussion among Chinese businessmen, representative of Chinese foreign department, Nepali businessmen and representatives of the immigration office slated for tomorrow.
Even as efforts were underway to free the Nepali containers, the Chinese businessmen had taken 30 more containers in their control this morning as well. The Nepali businessmen blamed the Chinese authorities for encouraging the local businessmen to seize the containers.
Rajendra Kumar Shresha, chairman of Sindhupalchowk chapter of Chamber of Commerce and Industries, said that it was the foolhardiness on the part of the Chinese businessmen to take the containers on pretext of the robbery. He was of the opinion of solving the issue diplomatically.
Nepali businessmen, however, were still worried as the problem was not solved permanently. "We can't rest assured that our containers won't be captured again in case the dollar issue remains unresolved," Shrestha said, adding, "How can the Nepali businessmen give the robbed dollars?"
The police, however, have taken two security personnel posted at Swoyambhu into custody on the suspicion of their involvement in the looting.
