Chitwan transfers inmates to Bhimphedi prison

Chitwan, March 15

As many as 30 inmates have been transferred to Makwanpur’s Bhimphedi Prison from the district prison in Chitwan.

Chitwan district prison had been accommodating 630 prisoners against its capacity of 255.

Chief Kamal Prasad Kafle at the district prison in Chitwan, informed that the prison’s capacity was 255 persons, but they had been housing 600 jailbirds. “We sent 30 male inmates to Bhimphedi prison after the prison became overcrowded,” Kafle said.

Health situation in the prison was also considered before the transfers. The prison office feared communicable diseases would spread inside the facility with the summer approaching. Jailbirds in the correctional facility are also patients of cancer, kidney and other diseases. There are at least five cancer patients serving time in the facility.

According to Kafle, the number of inmates in Chitwan district prison has been rising due to various reasons.

There are as many as 262 male jailbirds, 280 male detainees, 21 women jailbirds, 33 women detainees and four minors — two boys and girls each in the prison.
