CIAA charges APF’s former IG Basnet with graft

Kathmandu, February 29

The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority today filed corruption case against former inspector general of Armed Police Force Sanat Kumar Basnet and six serving officers of the APF.

The other defendants against whom the anti-corruption body filed corruption case at the Special Court are APF inspectors Bin Bahadur Thapa, Munihara Mahat and Shiva Bahadur Adhikari and sub-inspectors Devendra Kumar Shrestha, Nil Bahadur Shrestha and Lekh Bahadur Khatri.

The anti-graft body accused Basnet of embezzling Rs 9,15,81,151 and sought to recoup the amount from him. Basnet served as APF chief from mid-April 2009 to mid-August 2011.

CIAA also sought to recover Rs 9,15,81,151 from Bin Bahadur Thapa, Rs 73, 23,954 and Rs 23,59, 010 from Munihara Mahat and Shiva Bahadur Adhikari, respectively, Rs 83,83,136 from Devendra Kumar Shrestha, Rs 1,06,64,734 from Nil Bahadur Shrestha and Rs 1,06,29, 712 from Lekh Bahadur Khatri.

The anti-corruption body has accused the defendants of producing false bills of transport companies that did not exist. CIAA said the defendants also prepared false bills of airlines companies to show cargo had been sent to destinations and claimed amount from the government.

According to a press release issued by the CIAA, the defendants took advance payment in the name of employees   on the order of Basnet but did not supply the goods that they were supposed to.

CIAA had filed corruption cases against suspended IG of APF Kosh Raj Onta and former IGs of APF Basudev Oli and   Shailendra Kumar Shrestha.
