Citizenship Act triggers protest

Kathmandu, December 22:

Members of the Citizenship Misuse Resistance Committee said today Nepalis would become a minority in Nepal if the Citizenship Act-2006 was implemented.

Stating that the Act is full of flaws, the CMRC also announced that it would form a team to prevent non-Nepalis from acquiring Nepali citizenship.

“We will not let the government team distribute Nepali citizenship certificates to non-Nepalis. We will help identify real Nepalis, who have been deprived of citizenship,” Chetendra Jung Himali, the joint coordinator of the committee, said at a protest held by the committee in Ason.

According to an advocate, Gokul Bhandari, clauses 3, 4 and 5 of the Act are ‘annoying’. “The situation in Nepal will be like that of Fiji in 10 years if the government distributes citizenship on the basis of those clauses.” He demanded that Citizenship Act-2006 be scrapped at the earliest.

“The Act has opened all four doors for foreigners to enter Nepal and get Nepali citizenship certificates. The Act can turn the Nepalis into a minority in the near future,” Sadhya Bahadur Bhandari, the member-secretary of the CMRC, said at a meeting.
