Clash shuts ed institutions

ITAHARI: All Nepal National Independent Students’ Union-Revolutionary and Nepal Students’ Union today enforced the closure of educational institutions

in Sunsari district to protest yesterday’s police action in Janata Multiple Campus premises.

There are 31 colleges and 450 schools in the district. JMC has been running on and off after the failure of the campus administration and local political parties to declare the winner in the Free Student’s Union elections held in March.

CPN-UML-affiliated ANNFSU yesterday organised welcome and swearing-in programmes at the campus claiming that the election committee had declared them winners. NSU and ANNISU-R later intervened in the programme and padlocked the campus gate. The clash ensued when the organisers tried to resume the programmes after breaking the lock.

Students Madan Chudal and Bijaya Chudal were injured in the police action. The students have demanded action against the personnel involved in the incident. The campus area remained tensed this morning as well due to the disputes among the unions. The agitating unions have padlocked the campus indefinitely. The clash is said to have been fuelled due to the negligence of the campus administration and inefficiency of political leaders.

District Chairman of ANNFSU Jitendra Basnet said the situation had worsened as the Nepali Congress and UCPN-Maoist affiliated student unions had denied their claim. The bandh has affected the ongoing exam of the master’s level.
