Complaint filed against doctors

POKHARA: Police have started investigation following complaints that some 11 doctors practising at the Pokhara-based Manipal Medical College Teaching Hospital have crossed the age limit and so are not legally eligible to continue service.

As per the rule of Nepal Medical Council, doctors cannot continue practising once they cross 73 years of age. A complaint had been filed at the hospital administration, saying that over-aged doctors were practising at the hospital.

The administration had then forwarded the file to the police. As per the complaint, around a dozen doctors including Dr SN Baba, Dr Surendramohan Sharma, Dr Arun Mukharji, Dr BC Roy, Dr NK Haraja and Dr VM Alulakar are still practising at the hospital despite crossing the age limit of 73.

Hospital director Dr Singhi, on his part, argued that the doctors in question were not practising regularly. “The doctors against whom the complaint has been filed have been working here for the past 17 years or more and are involved in teaching,” he said, adding, “In case of Dr Alulakar, he had seen patients at their own request.”
