Concern over food shortage expressed

Nepalgunj, May 25

A three-day regional workshop on "Food Security: Opportunity and Challenges" organised under the joint auspices of Rural Reconstruction Nepal (RRN) and action aid, western regional office, Nepalgunj began here on Friday.

Some 35 persons including representatives from various government and non-government officials related to food programme in Banke, Bardia, Dang, Surkhet, Kanchanpur and Kailali districts of the mid-and far western region are taking part in the workshop.

Inaugurating the workshop, Banke District Development Committee (DDC) chairman Omprakash Rana pointed out the need for the government to put agriculture development in the priority list in order to guarantee food security in the country.

Chief District Officer Dhruva Raj Wagle expressed the view that the decline in agriculture production as a result of the low return for farmers has led to food shortage.

Central vice-president of Nepal Bar Association Govinda Bandi, Federation of Nepali Journalists, Banke president Niraj Gautam and other speakers also expressed their views at the programme chaired by chairperson of RRN, Nepalgunj Dhan Bahadur Ayer.
