Continued strikes spark food crisis

Phidim, November 6:

Vehicles remained off the Phidim-Sidin road for the sixth consecutive day today. Taxi-owners had called a transport strike after some youths beat up Narendra Shrestha, a taxi driver, at Khalangatar.

The road remains shut even though the youths reached an agreement with the taxi-owners in the presence of the police to provide treatment to the injured and compensate him.

Local residents are on a strike since yesterday to protest the strike of taxi-owners. “Our vehicles are grounded as people have called a two-day from yesterday,” taxi-owners said.

Ongoing strikes have caused a shortage of essentials in Nangin, Yangnam, Sidin and Prangbung areas of Panchthar district.
