Copies of broadsheet dailies including THT burned in Tarai

KATHMANDU/BIRGUNJ: A group of unidentified people have torched copies of The Himalayan Times, Annapurna Post and Karobar national broadsheet dailies in Parsa on Monday.

According to THT Dispatch Supervisor, Arjun Gautam, the dailies were set ablaze at around 7 in the morning at Parwanipur, near Brigunj, of Parsa.

The driver, Roj Thapa Magar, added that a group of 30-40 bandh enforcers stopped the vehicle (Ba 12 Cha 6972) and asked for the papers. When he gave them the papers, they started setting them on fire. The driver had fled the scene at the moment.

Magar said that the vehicle was not damaged and he is also safe.

He further added that all the papers were being delivered by the same vehicle.

The papers were to be dispatched to Tripur, Maisthan, Ghantaghar and Jhingu of the district along with Kalaiya of Bara.

Police Inspector at the Parsa District Police Office, Sheikh Adalat, has confirmed that the cadres affiliated to United Democratic Madhesi Front burned the copies.

He surmised that the cadres disgruntled over the newly promulgated Constitution burned the newspapers for carrying the stories.

Consequently, no paper has been distributed in the area.

Meanwhile, the curfew in the Birgunj area was lifted for two hours, from 7 am to 9 am.

UDMF cadres were seen demonstrating and burning tires at Mulichok, Ghantaghar and Ashok Batika areas in the morning today.
