Cycles bring hundreds of Kailali girls back to school
KAILALI: Twenty-two-year-old Urmila Chaudhary of Udasipur VDC-5 of Kailalai district failed to pass the School Leaving Certificate (SLC) examinations twice.
A depressed Chaudhary had already left the school, but she recently decided to go back.
Like her, Shobha Chaudhary (23), who left the school five years ago, also joined the school again.
Return of the dropout girls to the school has been possible thanks to a campaign aimed at bringing girls back to school.
Distribution of bicycles, bags, books, copies, pens and operating extra classes have been launched to let the girls return to the school.
Forum for Awareness and Youth Activity-Nepal (FAYA-Nepal) Director Dharma Raj Pathak informed that as many as 766 girl students would be participating in this year's SLC exams as a result of the campaign.
Most of these girls are from Tharu community, orphaned or from poor family backgrounds.
District Education Officer, Ganesh Bahadur Singh informed that the campaign was launched putting the marginalised girls at the centre.
He further said 157 clubs had been operated in 30 schools to run extra classes.
The dropout rate of school also decreased after the awareness programme, informed Indra Bam, a teacher in Bhawani Rastriya Secondary School of Masuriya VDC.
