'Democratic norms must get a mention in statute'

JHAPA: Nepali Congress vice-president and parliamentary party leader Ram Chandra Paudel today said that the country’s new constitution should clearly mention about democratic norms and assumptions.

He also reiterated that his party, NC, would never compromise on democratic values. Speaking at a programme organised at the NC’s district party office in Jhapa’s Birtamode today, he said that he had come to visit the eastern districts as part of the peace campaign fixed by NC central committee.

“The objective of the campaign is to make enough the path of constitution drafting and to establish lasting peace before the promulgation of democratic constitution,” he said. Paudel also accused the Maoists of cheating Nepali people by dividing state on the basis of caste. “The Maoists have been behaving like clever wolves,” he said, adding that CPN-UML chairman Jhalanath Khanal’s flexible policy already threw a spanner in the constitution promulgation process.

Speaking on the occasion, NC leader Krishna Prasad Sitaula cast doubt over the timely promulgation of the constitution as “followers of extremism and left ideology have tried to invite bloodshed in country”.
