Don’t underrate Madhesi MPs’ resignation, Thapa tells govt
Kathmandu, December 13:
Chairman of the Rastriya Janashakti Party, Surya Bahadur Thapa, today warned that if the government “undervalued” the resignation handed in by four Madhesi lawmakers on December 10 the situation could be “beyond control”.
“Since this development is not ordinary, it shouldn’t be underrated” Thapa said at the special hour of today’s parliament. He added that the resignation had a “deep meaning”.
He said this is an indication that the situation is now “out of the grip” of the seven parties and though the resignations appear “ordinary and minor” it could have greater repercussions in the long run.
“This is an indication of the failure of the seven-party alliance,” he added suggesting political leaders refrain from giving “irresponsible” statement against the resignation and the Madhes issue.
Talking about the resignation, CPN-Maoist lawmaker Dev Gurung said it could even take the “form of a separatist movement” if the government ignored the Madhesi demands.
“It is time the government brought a proposal for an amendment in the interim constitution,” Gurung said and warned that his party would be compelled to launch a movement if the government failed to do so by December 15.
“If the government still ignored the call for constitutional amendment, it will be solely responsible for the consequences,” he added. He also emphasised on state restructuring with federalism to avert “possible disaster” in the country.
Lawmaker Dilaram Acharya justified the lawmakers’ resignations saying that interim parliament has been a mere rubber stamp of the seven parties.
“What can we expect from a parliament which has been a pawn of the seven parties?” he said to the Speaker adding that the parliament’s job now has been limited to reading out letters of the 7-party leaders and endorsing them.
