Dozens of Taplejung houses buried; Mechi Highway obstructed

PHIDIM: Dozens of houses have been buried in a landslide triggered by torrential rainfall in Taplejung district on Friday.

Houses belonging to Bhawani Shankar Nepal, Agni Prasad Bhandari, Teknath Dahal, Dilliram Adhikari, Raj Kumar Magar, Jagat Bahadur Magar, Guru Prasad BK, Som Bahadur BK and Gangamaya Bhattarai of Taplejung Municipality-8 were buried yesterday.

According to locals of Phungling-2, six houses along with that of Netra Prasad Bhattarai have also been destroyed in the landslide. Other 10 houses near the district headquarters have also been destroyed by the landslip.

A team comprising personnel from the Nepal Police, the Armed Police Office and the Nepal Army have been deployed at the landslide-hit areas for rescue operation. Continuous rainfall in the area, however, has added to the woes of the locals there.

Meanwhile, vehicular movement along the Mechi Highway has been obstructed following the multiple landslides.

At least three major landslides have obstructed the Kabeli-Phungling road section along the Highway, according to police.
