Drug firm blacklisting row ends

Dharan, June 27:

The row over the blacklisting of pharmaceutical companies by ENT department in BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS) in Dharan has ended with the department withdrawing its move.

Doctors of the Otorhinolaryngology Department (ENT) of the health institute had banned entry of representatives of six pharmaceutical companies into the institute for not assisting the department in its educational activities.

The companies blacklisted by the doctors included Aristo, Quest, Mark, Asian, Norvatis and Time.

The Himalayan Times had on May 16 published news about the blacklist, which had resulted in the BPKIHS administration seeking explanation from Dr Sangeeta Bhandari, the ENT department head.

Dr Bhandari, had clarified that the administration did not have any clear policy against blacklisting pharmaceutical and that it was not fair to seek clarification over an action taken months ago.

She had insisted that the blacklist would not be removed until the BPKIHS made public its policy on preventing any pharmaceutical company representative from entering the hospital departments.
