Quake victims left in lurch

Lamjung, March 7

As many as 371 victims displaced by the 2015 earthquakes in Kolki, Lamjung have now spent 23 months in makeshift tents.

Many people lost their homes during the devastating earthquakes, forcing them to weather rain and cold in flimsy huts for the past two years.

Many of these quake victims are too poor to rebuild their homes.

Meghraj Gurung, a victim, said that they were still waiting for government aid to rebuild their houses. Another victim, Bhim Kumari Gurung, went so far as to say that they would probably not receive the aid promised by the government in their lifetime.

The tremor victims expressed worry over the possibility of facing the coming monsoons under makeshift tents.

As many as 5,000 families who lost their homes during the quake still have not received government grant for reconstruction. These victims were not even given the Rs 15,000 relief money and Rs 10,000 for warm clothes because their names did not figure in the list of quake victims.
