Highway obstructed as sugarcane farmers continue demo

RAUTAHAT: Sugarcane farmers in Rautahat district on Saturday obstructed the East-West Highway in Chandranigahapur of the district, demanding that the Shreeram Sugar Mills immediately pay them the due amount.

The farmers have been staging protests for last one week demanding that the Garuda-based company pay them the due worth around Rs 950 million for three fiscal years including the current one.

Around 700 farmers have gathered on the street under the leadership of Ashok Yadav and chanting slogans against the company and its Director Diwakar Golchha.

They also burned an effigy of industrialist Golchha.

Yadav said they resorted to the road obstruction after the company did not pay them the due despite that it assured the farmers of payment time and again.

The obstruction had lasted for around two hours from 1 to 3 pm.

Though traffic was not so heavy as it was the weekend today, dozens of vehicles were stranded halfway.

Earlier, the farmers had obstructed the Gaur-Chandranigahapur road section in the district for two consecutive days.
