EC publishes final list of nominees

Kathmandu, June 20

The Election Commission today unveiled the final list of candidates contesting in the second phase of local level polls schedule for June 28.

The poll panel said that it also provided election symbols to the candidates. More than 63,000 candidates are contesting for 15,038 posts in 334 local levels of 33 districts in province 1, 5 and 7. They will compete for mayoral, deputy mayoral, chief and deputy chiefs of rural municipalities, ward chiefs as well as other posts.

“Our district offices have published the final list of the candidates and provided election symbols to them,” said EC Spokesperson Surya Prasad Sharma. He, however, said that the EC’s central office does not have cumulative figures for the candidates, due to network and communication barriers.

Local level elections will be held in one metropolitan city, seven sub-metropolitan cities, 111 municipalities and 215 rural municipalities.

According to the election body, there are as many as 6,432,765 eligible voters in 33 districts of provinces 1, 5 and 7. The poll panel has decided to set up 4,581 polling locations and 8,364 polling centres for the second phase of elections.

As per the constitution, political parties have fielded at least 50 per cent women candidates in mayoral or deputy mayoral posts in all metropolis, sub-metropolis and municipalities.

Likewise, at least 50 per cent women candidates were fielded for the post of chair or deputy chair in all rural municipalities. At least 40 per cent women representation has been ensured in each ward of all the local levels by the constitution.
