EC tells parties to better PR closed-lists

Altogether 11 political parties which have submitted closed-lists of candidates for the proportional representation system of election for more than 30 per cent seats, have not fulfilled the required criteria, the Election Commission has said.

The EC has said that the parties including CPN-Maoist, Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, Rastriya Prajatantra Party, CPN-ML, Janamorcha Nepal, Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal, Rastriya Janashakti Party, Rastriya Janamorcha Party, CPN (Unified) and the Socialist Democratic Janata Party have submitted closed-list of candidates under the proportionate representation system of election for more than 30 per cent seats in the Constituent Assembly but have not ensured proportional representation of women, Dalits, oppressed, nationalities and indigenous communities, backward area, Madhesi and other groups, the EC has said.

The parties submitting a closed-list of candidates for less than 30 per cent seats in the Constituent Assembly need not follow the proportionate representation provision but have to maintain gender balance.

Meanwhile, the EC has said that the counting of votes under the PR system is ongoing in 12 constituencies including Saptari 1 and 6, Siraha 2, 3 and 5, Mahottari 5, Sarlahi 6, Surkhet 6 and Baglung 1, 2 and 3.

According to the latest reports, counting of 10,186,262 votes has been completed of which the CPN (Maoist) got 3,047,308 votes followed by Nepali Congress with 2,168,943, CPN-UML with 2,088,555, Madhesi Janadhikar Forum with 597,954, Tarai Madhesh Loktantrik Party with 309,260 while RPP got 253,600 votes.

Likewise, the CPN-ML received 235,037 votes, Sadvawana Party got 160,577, Janamorcha Nepal received 151,493, CPN-United got 148,167, RPP Nepal got 106,260 and Rastriya Janashakti Party bagged 98,806 votes. The Rastriya Janamorcha, Nepal Workers’ and Peasants’ Party, Federal Democratic National Front, Rastriya Janamukti Party, Nepal Sadbhawana Party (Anandidevi), Nepali Janata Dal, CPN (Unified), Nepa Rastriya Party, Socialist Democratic Janata Party and Dalit Janjati Party received more than 30,000 votes and could possibly be represented in the CA.

Counting of votes for the FPTP system of election has completed with the CPN-Maoist securing 120 of the 240 seats. Nepali Congress, the CPN-UML, the Madhesi Janaadhikar Forum finished second, third and fourth respectively
