Kathmandu, May 12:
Protesting against ‘deliberate’ firing by army men at the Mahendranagar campus, in which
three students were seriously injured, students took out torch rallies from Patan, Ason, Baneshwor, Samakhushi, Chabahil, Kirtipur, Tahachal, and Baka Bazar (Bhaktapur).
As part of the protest against the incident, seven student unions have announced a nationwide strike in educational institutes tomorrow. The unions are also organising a protest rally in the capital against the shootout.
Forwarding their demands, which include the restoration of democracy, withdrawal of security personnel and government spies from all the campus premises, release of political detainees, a probe into the Mahendranagar shootout, and the release of political leaders detained by the Royal Commission for Corruption Control, they have called on the government to meet them immediately.
Stating that their movement will gain momentum from tomorrow, Kalyan Kumar Gurung, joint general secretary of the Nepal Students’ Union, appealed to “all educational institutes to support our movement by closing down the educational institutes tomorrow.”
Meanwhile, the Nepal Students’ Union (NSU) held a valley working committee meeting today to give a boost to tomorrow’s protest programmes.
