Elderly couple divorce in Dhankuta

Dhankuta, July 23

A man aged 77 and his 60-year-old wife have divorced in Sahidbhumi Rural Municipality of Dhankuta. Barmadhowj Rai and his wife Barmeswori parted ways legally after the latter filed for divorce at Dhankuta District Court, citing strained relations between the two.

Dhankuta District Court had upheld the plaintiff’s demand and issued a divorce verdict to the Rai couple. The Rai couple were married since 1977.

Barmeswori told the court she had been living separately for 39 years after her hubby did not support her in the upbringing of their two daughters. Their two daughters are 42 and 38 years old respectively.

According to Dhakuta District Court, a 59-year-old husband and his 49-year-old wife had also divorced about a month ago in the district. The district court registered five divorce cases two years ago. The number of divorce cases reached 34 in the previous fiscal.

As many as 265 cases were registered in the court last fiscal, said district judge Binod Kumar Pokhrel.

With the introduction of the New Civil Code in July last year, 11 cases of divorce with males plaintiffs were filed at the court. The district court attributed foreign employment, love marriage, family rift, among others, as reasons for rising divorce cases.
