Election schedule published

Kathmandu, January 24:

The detail programme of the municipal elections scheduled for February 8 was published today in the concerned District Election Officer’s Office across the nation.

According to the Election Commission, registration of nomination papers by the candidates and publication of the list of candidates will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on January 26, protest and complaint against the candidacy will take place

from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on January 27, withdrawal of candidate from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on January 28 and the publication of final list of candidates along with their election symbol will take place on January 28.

The name and list of the polling centres in the municipalities have been published at the respective District Election Officer’s Office in the districts today.

A total of 72 parties have been registered at the Commission for the municipal elections to be held in one Metropolis, four Sub-metropolis and 53 municipalities of 43 districts across the country.

This is the third time that local body elections is being held since the restoration of democracy in the country. Prior to this, local body elections was held in 2049 B.S. and 2054 B.S.

Meanwhile, reports have been received of the election programme published in District Election Officer’s Office.

In Kirtipur, a total of 19 polling centres have been fixed with one each in the 19 wards of the municipality.

Altogether 132 employees, including chiefs of polling centres, polling centre assistants, assistant officials and peons will be mobilised for the election, said assistant election officer Indra Prasad Dhungana. Kirtipur municipality has a total of 23,831 voters.

In Madhyapur Thimi, the Office of the Assistant Election Officer was established at the Madhyapur Thimi Municipality today with the objective of facilitating the filing of nominations by the candidates.

‘Tough measures’

Tanahun: Assistant Minister for General Administration, Toran Bahadur Gurung, on Tuesday warned that the government would adopt tough measures against political parties if they tried to disrupt the upcoming municipal polls.

Directing office heads of Tanahun district in Damauli, Gurung accused the political parties of joining hands with the Maoists to foil the elections. — HNS
