KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 28
Rara Lake, Nepal's largest water body renowned for its natural beauty, is increasingly under threat from encroaching vegetation along its shores.
This rapid overgrowth is disrupting the lake's pristine environment and delicate ecological balance.
Nanda Singh Rokaya, a teacher from Murma in Chhayanath Municipality, expressed concern over the impact on the lake's ecosystem. He observed that the once-crystal-clear, vibrant blue waters and refreshing atmosphere are now being compromised by excessive vegetation. "The water was much clearer during my youth, but now it has started to emit an odor," he remarked.
The Rara National Park Office acknowledges the urgent need to address the issue but cites limited resources and budget constraints as significant challenges. Despite these limitations, the office remains committed to preserving the lake's natural allure.
Senior Conservation Officer Mahesh Neupane shared plans for a cleanup campaign targeting the western part of the lake, including Nijar and surrounding areas, which is expected to commence soon.
Experts have urged authorities to adopt a strategic and sustainable approach to managing vegetation, cleaning the lake, and safeguarding the region's biodiversity effectively.
