European Union support to build resilient shelters in Nepal

KATHMANDU: The European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection Department (ECHO) has extended their support to the ACT Alliance, a global alliance of churches and related organisations, to launch the Shelter Support to the Earthquake Affected Communities of Nepal (SEACON) project.

The consortium members of the organisation launched the project at a function organised in Chitwan today.

The project would address the prevailing and vital recovery needs of adequate shelters and provide technical skills in correct building methods, proper construction materials and cash support allowing the targeted households to build resilient shelters as well as improving the capacity of communities to manage current and future disasters, the consortium members said in a press release.

Out of the total budget of Euro 1.1 million, the ECHO provided Euro 850,000 to the project and remaining Euro 250,000 was co-financed by the consortium members, according to the statement.

The project has targeted to provide safe and resilient shelters to 2,200 households in five VDCs and one municipality each in Dhading, Makawanpur and Lamjung districts.

The programme would also ensure the training of local masons and carpenters to enhance their skills and knowledge.

Moreover, the programme would also be providing shelter orientation to the local community people in the respective working areas and capacity building and support to institutionalise Disaster Risk Reduction at the VDC level.

The project would run from May 2016 to April 2017 in coordination with district and national authorities and humanitarians.

An end-line survey would be carried out to determine the impact of the project and the findings would be shared with all the concerned stakeholders, the statement informed.
