Ex-PM hints at major political change
Kathmandu, April 28:
Chairman of the Rastriya Janashakti Party (RJP) Surya Bahadur Thapa today indicated at a political “change of great agnitude”, which he said would be the “greatest” in Nepal’s history, after 238 years.
“The change that is going to happen will be of great magnitude,” Thapa, who arrived from New Delhi today, told reporters at his Maligaon residence.
Former Prime Minister Thapa said this change would be the biggest in Nepal’s history after the unification of the country some 238 years back. He, however, did not elaborate whether the change that he was indicating at was a republican set-up.
Referring to the initiatives taken by the CPN-Maoist and the CPN-UML on Left unity, the RJP supremo emphasised on unity among democratic forces. “Nepali Congress (NC), as the biggest democratic party, should take the lead and Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala should take the initiative,” he added.
Thapa, who met Indian leaders, including Indian foreign minister Pranab Mukherjee in New Delhi, said India would readily accept any decision of the Nepali people. “They (Indian leaders) are, however, worried about the latest situation in Nepal. They want peaceful transformation,” Thapa said.
He said it would be futile to put all blame on PM Koirala for the delay in holding constituent assembly polls. “It is a matter of time and situation,” he said, adding, “It is a mistake on the part of all the eight-party leaders since they made the time-table in a haste and euphoria,” he said. Regarding the declaration of republic from interim parliament, Thapa said, “Every significant decision should be made through the people. Leaders cannot snatch away people’s rights.”
