Experts urge govt to relocate houses, schools on Tarebhir foothills
KATHMANDU: As many as 25 houses and a school on foothills of the Tarebhir hill on the northeast outskirts of Kathmandu district need to be shifted to a safer location, geologists said.
A geologists' team from the Department of Mines and Geology which was in the site for a survey following the recent earthquake concluded that human settlement on the foothills must to be shifted toother places for at least six months.
The hill facing south has developed huge cracks in five places, putting the settlement at high risk, they concluded.
The rock with fissures may fall down at any time, according to Leelanath Rimal and Jayraj Ghimire, who were in the team.
The team suggested the government to fence the Tarebhir Monastery with a high wall from above to avert possible damages in case of the rockfall.
Following rainfall on Friday evening last week, a landslide was triggered in Tarebhir the following morning and big boulders had rolled down from the hill and crashed near the human settlement, exclusively inhabited by Tamang community, according to locals.
