Illegal driving licenses has emerged as a major problem for authorities working in the field of traffic management in Jhapa.

According to Inspector Dhundiraj Giri of District Traffic Police Office, Jhapa, most of the licences the traffic police had intercepted earlier were found to be fake following an investigation.

“After the licence holders didn’t come to receive them for long, we contacted the Transportation Management Office, and then it dawned upon us that most of them were fake,” he said.

Further, inspector Giri suspected a racket was operating in making fake driving licences in the district.

As a case in point, driving licence number 01-042136 that the traffic police had intercepted earlier features the name of Yam Kumar Mahat of Jhapa, Prithvinagar. However, investigation showed that a driving license with that number was actually issued in the name of Nathuni Prasad Sah, a local resident of Siraha, Ramnagar.

On his part, Transportation Management Office Mechi Information Officer Tanka Bahadur Karki conceded that the problem of fake licences was rife in the district and he sought an investigation.

“In fact, TMO is not responsible for all this as there could be a racket involved in it,” he said, seeking investigation into the matter.
