Famine plagues Kalikot
Kalikot, July 13:
People in eastern Kalikot have been reeling under food shortage.
People of Daha, Pankha, Chhapra, Odanuk, Sukatiya, Mugraha and Gola of Kalikot district have been affected the most. Low crop yield has caused food shortage, Padam Bahadur Shahi of Sukatiya VDC said.
“We neither have food nor money to buy it,” Man Bahadur Malla of Pakha-4 said. A total of 700 quintals of rice supplied to the Nepal Food Corporation depots at Padamghat and Khallagadh during winter has already been consumed,” Namraj Shahi of Daha-5 said, adding: “I arrived in Manma, the district headquarters of Kalikot, to purchase rice, but in vain. There is no rice in the NFC depot.”
“In the past, the government used to supply us enough food. But no food stuff has been supplied this year,” locals said. The Kalikot district administration office said the World Food Programme and the local administration were working to solve the crisis.
