Fear of landslides
OKHALDHUNGA: Human settlement at Solaghar of Mamkha is at high risk of landslides. As many as 70 households in the locality are at high risk of landslides.
“Recurring soil erosion on the riverbanks along with the fear of being buried under landslide have been giving us sleepless nights,” said Dambar Rai of Solaghar. Jit Maya Tamang of the locality said the local administration has remained indifferent to their plight.
More than 40 cattle died due to landslides in the locality whereas over hundreds of ropani of cultivable land has turned barren. Landslide has destroyed local Kalika Primary School building as well. Constituent Assembly members from the district had assured of reconstructing the school building, but no initiative has been taken towards that end so far.
Local Dilli Ram Tamang said some of the locals vacated their houses and moved to safer locations fearing landslides. Some families have been taking shelter at their relatives’ houses while others have been staying awake throughout the night, said locals.
A massive landslide recently claimed local Abiraj Dahal as well as his wife, destroyed five micro-hydro power projects and as many bridges.
