Flood-hit Musahar settlement untouched by electioneering
Rajbiraj, November 20
Election fever has swept through almost all municipalities and rural municipalities in Saptari district. However, the Musahar settlement in Tilathi Koiladi Rural Municipality-4 of the district has remained untouched by it as the community is still struggling to recover from flood of the last monsoon.
As many as 60 Musahar households live in the settlement where 35 houses were swept away by the flooded Khando River on August 7.
Jhagadu Sada, a victim, said they were compelled to leave their settlement and take shelter under tents at Koshi Barrage for three months after the disaster. “My constant fear that this bamboo hut might collapse keeps me awake all night,” he added.
The plight of another victim, Anita Sada, is no different. She added that she also lost her husband some three months before the disaster and the flood had only added salt to her injury. She said the monsoon brought a lot of misery to her family as she also had to look after her kids without their father. “I have nothing to feed my children as the flood swept away everything that I had,” she added.
Phudan Sada from the same locality said no one had so far paid attention to resolving the victims’ plight. “Candidates during elections visit our settlement with many promises, but once elections are over, they never show up again,” he added.
He further said the victims were forced to sleep on empty stomach. Almost all the Musahars are said to be landless. They said that though they complained about their condition, no leader or government agency heeded their plight.
