Flood obstructs transportation along Beni-Jomsom road
MUSTANG: The Beni-Jomsom road section has come to disruption since Wednesday evening with flooding in the Begkhola in Annapurna Rural Municipality of Myagdi district.
The downpour-triggered floods in Thadokhola, a tributary of Begkhola eroded road section, resulting in the disruption of Beni-Jomsom transport. The heavy rainfall on Wednesday afternoon had abruptly increased water level in the Kaligandaki River, its tributaries and rivulets that obstructed the road.
Prem Purja, a local resident of Tiblyang shared that the traffic movement remained obstructed till late evening when water level did not drop.
There is huge inflow of domestic and foreign tourists to Mustang via Beni-Jomsom road with the direct transportation service to and from Jomsom and Muktinath via jeep and motorcycle.
The water level in Kaligandaki River has risen due to the bed loads such as rocks and boulders brought by floods last year. The traffic remains obstructed in the road following torrential rains, informed Secretary at Myagdi Jeep and Bus Operators Committee, Suma Shrestha.
The concerned authorities have not made any systematic efforts to resolve the problem, Shrestha said and added that it should be put on top priority to enable environment for influx of tourists.
The flood takes place in Begkhola with incessant rainfall in upper area.
Last year the flood-fed Thadokhola had swept away 12 households and a Bailey bridge.
