Foreign Secretary Bharat Raj Paudyal highlighted the adverse impacts of climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic on developing and poor countries and stressed the role of the Non-Alignment Movement in winning the battle against these adversities and charting out post-pandemic pathways.
Addressing the annual ministerial meeting of NAM on the margins of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly in New York yesterday, he said, "NAM must aim at enhancing robust cooperation, focus on uplifting lives and livelihoods, and contribute to creating equal opportunities for all."
He also emphasised reform in global financial governance system, making international financial institutions more democratic, inclusive and efficient.
Paudyal said NAM should continue emphasising unconditional fulfilment of disarmament obligations and be an unrelenting force in addressing the divide between the North and the South. "It must promote sovereign equality and political independence of member states, and champion a just and equitable world where developing counties can ensure dignified life to their people." He added, "As one of the founding members of NAM, Nepal places unwavering faith in the principles of NAM and is committed to realising our aspirations of peace and prosperity."
Paudyal attended the reception hosted by US President Joe Biden on the occasion of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
