French Montagne et Partage removes 5 tons of waste from Mt Everest

 

KATHMANDU: French organsation Montagne et Partage has successfully recovered 5 tons of waste from the Mount Everest region recently.

An ambitious 40-day mission dubbed "Everest Green" was launched from April 13 to May 23 and recovered wastage products from Everest's base camp 5300 metres to South Col 7906 metres, as stated in the press release issued by the French Embassy in Kathmandu, yesterday.

In a statement, the French Diplomatic Mission said, "2 tons of waste were sent to Namche for incineration whereas 3 tons of recyclable waste is being sent to Kathmandu for further processing, a majority were aluminum, nylon cords, textiles, scrap waste, batteries, plastic objects etc".

The project cost Euro 150,000 was solely funded by the Montagne et Partage.

French Diplomat recalled the relationship between Nepal-France and highlighted the need to raise environmental awareness amongst the relevant stakeholders as a long-term solution, reads the statement.

Meanwhile, French Ambassador to Nepal Yves Carmona honoured the expedition group and in return was presented with a symbolic expedition flag.
