Fresh earthquake hits Siraha

KATHMANDU: A fresh earthquake of local magnitude 4.2 hit Siraha district of eastern Nepal at 6:17 am (00:17 UTC) on Wednesday.

The National Seismological Centre said it was not related to the April 25 earthquake and thus not an aftershock of the magnitude 7.6-earthquake that rattled Nepal last year.

According to the NSC, the epicentre of the quake was located between Arnamalapur and Hakpara villages of Siraha district. The coordinates of the location are given as 26.68°N, 86.27°E.

NSC records since 1994 show that four light earthquakes were recorded with Siraha as epicentre in the last decade.

As many as 427 aftershocks of magnitude 4 or above were recorded from the April 25 earthquake till January 22.
