Fuel tankers, carrier trucks "smoothly entering" Nepal from India via major customs points
KATHMANDU: Carrier trucks and fuel tankers are smoothly entering Nepal from India through various border entry points including Birgunj, Bhariahawa and Nepalgunj on Tuesday, said Laxmi Prasad Dhakal, spokesperson at the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The short customs points at Mahottari and Sarlahi, however, remained closed today, according to him.
As many as 40 tankers entered Birgunj from Raxaul earlier today, he informed. The India-Nepal border, which was closed for some hours in the afternoon, reopened at around 5:30 pm.
After that seven carrier trucks laden with various goods and 38 tankers laden with petroleum products have entered Nepal, he added.
India has beefed up security along the border in the wake of violent protests in the bordering areas in Nepal, taking into consideration the upcoming local elections in Bihar.
Meanwhile, the customs points at Bhairahawa and Nepalgunj remained open throughout the day and vehicular movement to and from the Indian side was smooth, Dhakal informed.
According to a source at District Administration Office, Rupandehi, 277 carrier trucks and 23 fuel tankers entered the Nepali from Sunauli till today afternoon.
The Tarai districts have remained paralysed since mid-August as the Madhesi parties launched agitation against the government over the purported Constitution and the local administrations imposed curfew and prohibitory orders following violent protests.
"More tankers, trucking entering Nepal"
Referring to the chief of Bhairahawa Customs Office, Labanya Kumar Dhakal, our Nawalparasi-based correspondent Shree Ram Sigdel reported that 23 fuel tankers and six LPG bullets passed through the customs point till 3 pm.
The number of tankers and carrier trucks with consignments entering Nepal has increased in the evening, according to Dhakal.
Dhakal added that the vehicles were stuck at the Indian side for two days as Nepali customs remained close due to public holidays announced for the celebration of promulgation of Nepal's Constitution.
