Key Takeaways:
- 6,126 case records were lost in arson attacks during the unrest
- 3,307 files have been restored so far across three courts
- Recovery campaign relies on copies from attorney offices and case parties
Judicial authorities in Gandaki Province have recovered more than 3,300 court case files destroyed during the September uprising, officials said Sunday.
A total of 6,126 case records were lost when arson incidents damaged legal documents at the High Court Pokhara, Kaski District Court and Tanahun District Court. Of these, 3,307 files have so far been restored through coordinated recovery efforts.
Nil Prasad Paneru, deputy registrar at the High Court Pokhara, said the High Court has recovered 250 of the 257 lost files. Kaski District Court has restored 1,989 of 2,065 destroyed records, while Tanahun District Court has recovered 1,083 of 1,804.
The courts launched a recovery campaign by requesting copies of case documents from district attorney offices and parties involved. The retrieved documents are being verified before reinstatement into official records. Separate teams have been mobilised to collect, examine and authenticate the recovered files.
Paneru said restoration remains a priority, as ongoing cases cannot proceed smoothly without complete records. He added that the campaign will continue until as many files as possible are restored.
