General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions (GEFONT) is to organise various programmes to mark the 113th International Labour Day (popularly known as May Day) with the slogan “One union, one voice”.

May Day is the grand festival of millions of hands working for building the world which has much significant value in the developing world like Nepal, said Binod Shrestha, treasurer of GEFONT, at a press meet here today.

According to a statement distributed on the occasion, a 115 member organising committee under the convenorship of Binod Shrestha has been formed to mark the day. The left wing federation is organising a blood donation programme, announcement of an annual joint programme with Nepal Trade Union Congress, various trainings, photo, poster and video exhibitions and a cultural show.

Workers all over the world have been observing May 1 as labour day since 1889, after the landmark labour movement in Chicago in 1886 In Nepal, the international May Day was observed in 1962 for the first time.
