Global alliance to combat HIV menace

Kathmandu, January 8:

Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS), along with Red Crescent Societies, has formed a global alliance to combat HIV/AIDS rampant in poor countries like Nepal.

The epidemic in some countries is so severe that it could well be classified as a disaster already causing 25 million deaths.

The disease has uncontrollably been spreading, with more than 33 million people living with the fatal disease, The NCRS is trying to multiply its efforts in responding to the disease and enhance their contribution to the nations severely affected by it.

Andre Reisinger, Federation representative to Nepal, speaking at a program organised by NRCS, claimed that the disease would kill more people in this decade alone than war and other disasters if it was not contained.

“The main focus area of this alliance will be to prevent the infection by generating awareness among people, expanding treatment and care to the infected and reducing the stigma and discrimination associated with the disease.” Reisinger added.

It is estimated that more than 75,000 people are living with the disease in Nepal while about 14 new infections occur everyday.

“We need to utilise our resources and find a solution to the problem as soon as possible. We need to ensure that the funds are used properly. The government will do its best but there should be a good management.” Said Dr. Dirgha Singh Bam, Acting Secretary at Ministry of Health and Population.
